Announcements — March 12, 2006

Welcome!  Friend, you enter this church as a guest of God. Come into God’s presence that you might walk closer to your Creator during this season of Lent.  If you are a visitor, we extend to you a special welcome and invite you to see the “Welcome to Visitors”.  Everyone is invited to our Fellowship Time in the Laws Room following worship this morning.

We give thanks to the Cherub Choir, under the direction of Lisa Porter, and the Hosanna Choir, conducted by Scott Dewese, for today’s music.

Member hospitalized this week:  Art King (Florida).

We offer our sympathy and support to:

The family of Eleanor Giles upon her death, March 6, 2006.

John and Lois Anderson upon the death of John’s father, Wayne, March 8, 2006.

Jeff and Sandy Mahon upon the death of Jeff’s grandmother, Edith Mahon, March 4, 2006.  She would have been 94 at the end of this month.

Liston and Betsy Hinson upon the stillbirth of their grandchild Logan Arrington, the child of Chris and Kate, in Wheaton, Illinois, March 4, 2006.

Aileen Howell and her daughter Wendy, on the loss of husband and father, Sidney Howell on March 8, 2006.

The flowers this morning are given to the glory of God in loving celebration of our children, Rob; Ann; Rob; Jessica; Chris; John; and our grandson Jackson and in loving appreciation of our parents by Charlie and Jayne Farber.

Each week we lift up members of our congregation in prayer.  Today and throughout the coming week, we ask you to remember in your prayers:  Junior Jacobs; David and Sharon Larson; Terry and Kathy Molewyk, Matthew, Mark; Pat Sampson.

Encouragement Campaign Cards are available today during Fellowship Time in the Laws Room.  Please take a moment to sign them.

LENTEN COLLAGE:  Lent is a time to remember the life of Jesus and the events of his last week on earth.  To help us, we are creating a living collage of symbols during these weeks of Lent.  Our first symbol, the palm - reminds us of how Holy week began with Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

This second Sunday of Lent we add another symbol, a money bag.  Early in the week Judas went to the high priest and for 30 pieces of silver agreed to betray Jesus.  The money bag reminds us of this tragedy – the betrayal of a trusting friend.

ADULT NURTURE OPPORTUNITIES TODAY:

TODAY Nancy Howard will lead a discussion on Chapter 5 of our Lenten Study book, Soul Feast. The title of this chapter is “The Practice of Self-Emptying – Rediscovering the Fast.” Regardless of your participation in one of our weekday Lenten small groups study (which is concentrating on chapters 1-4 of Soul Feast), you are encouraged to “partake” of this discussion on this ancient spiritual discipline of fasting. The class will meet in the Reeves room.

YOUR BIBLE!  The Study Begins, led by Barbara Newton during 10:30 a.m. Adult Nurture Time continues today in the Crump Room.  This is an introduction to the library of books which are the foundation of our faith. This study provides a refreshing orientation to the Book and opens a door of understanding to all other Bible studies.  Today will be the 5th of 7 one-hour sessions on Sunday mornings.  There will be some reading required during the week.  Please join us as we continue to study some basic topics like:   How has the Bible Been Preserved and Handed On? How Shall We Study the Bible?   What Is the Place of the Bible in Our Lives?

HOT MEALS:  The Youth will serve Hot Meals this Friday March 17th.  A trip to Dairy Queen will follow.  Pick up will be at Dairy Queen (616 3rd Street).  Please let us know if you will be able to help!  Call Christine or the church office at 372-3783.

SPRING FLOWER FUNDRAISER FOR PRESCHOOL:  Purchase Elsbury’s Spring Flower Coupons from March 1 – April 14 for $10.00 each in the office.  The coupon is worth $10.00 at Elsbury’s until June 15, 2006 for any spring and summer flowers or planting materials and preschool will receive a profit!  Elsbury’s has beautiful plants and we encourage you to stop in to see their wonderful selection of bedding, herbs, baskets, and perennials.  These coupons would make wonderful gifts for Easter, Mother’s Day or teachers!  We appreciate your support!

LITTLE RED SCHOOL HOUSE:  Did you know that local teachers get only 50 cents per child per year for school supplies?  This is why the Little Red School House supplies become even more critical this time of year.  Please help by donating NEW classroom materials such as pencil boxes, paper, prizes, notebooks, reward stickers, arts & crafts supplies... or anything a teacher might use.  Look for the donation box by the Community Table in the Laws Room during the month of March.  Monetary donations are great, too (checks payable to Little Red School House may be sent to the church office).

MEXICO MISSION TRIP:  Fairlawn Presbyterian Church has entered a mission partnership with Bethel Church in Cancun, Mexico.  Participants will leave Sunday, July 16 and return Saturday July 22, 2006.  If you are interested in joining them, please see Cal Brand or check at the church office for more information.  Registration deadline is March 31, 2006.
